Ambassador Gabrielyan Speaks at a Caucasus Conference at St. Andrews

 

St. Andrews. 16-17 April, 2010.  An international conference, entitled "The Caucasus, Imaging Freedom, Negotiating Dominion", was held by the Centre for Russia, Soviet, Central & East European Studies at the University of St. Andrews.

 

The Conference, which brought together renowned experts and academics from many countries discussed topics such as the recent conflicts in the region and their aftermath, the relation between the Caucasus and the West, nationality in historical perspective, language and identity, reality, reconciliation and religion, conflict, politics and criminality and others. 

H.E. Dr. Vahe Gabrielyan, Armenia's Ambassador to the UK, spoke briefly of the characteristics of the Armenian identity and described in depth the main foreign policy issues facing Armenia, the resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations and the recognition of the Armenian Genocide of 1915. He stressed that the improvement of Armenian-Turkish relations should not be seen as dependent on relations with third countries and reiterated the position of the Armenian Government that any questioning of the 1915 Genocide is inadmissible. In a panel with Ambassadors of Georgia and Azerbaijan, Dr. Gabrielyan answered questions about the NK conflict and the wider region.
